Just Blow It Up - Tree Stump Removal

posted in Contractors, Garden, Landscaping |

My stepfather is what you might call a country boy at heart. He has his own way of doing things and there isn’t much you can do to talk him out of it. I can’t say all of his choices are good ones, though he does have his heart in the right place. Perhaps it is because he grew up without a lot of money, but I’m not sure. If there is a cheaper way to do something, that’s how he does it. This was a lesson I learned at age 14 when we needed to get a tree out of our yard. He had his own version of tree stump removal, it’s something that I will never forget.

Though I’m not sure what is the proper way to go about tree stump removal might be, I do know that his idea was not something I should have witnessed. I’m glad I wasn’t more impressionable, or I may have tried it myself at a later time. His method of tree stump removal involved a small explosive and a whole lot of room. When I think about it now, I can’t believe he did it with us nearby. He put a firecracker as far down into the stump as he could and he blew it up. No one was hurt, but thinking about it now, it was not something I would ever do with children so close.

His version of tree stump removal wasn’t even all that great. It only blew up about half of the stump, though I suspect it was more about the boom than it was about getting it all up at once. He dug out the part that had been blown apart and then he did it again. In the end he achieved his goal of tree stump removal, and I do have to admit it cost him far less money than it would have cost him if he had hired someone to do it for him. Don’t try this at home kids, it’s just not safe!

If you need tree stump removal, you can do it the hard way by trying to dig it out yourself, but that can be back breaking work. My grandfather was a farmer before he retired and he had to do his fair share of tree stump removal while clearing fields. He always used a tractor to pull it out of the ground. It’s a tough job and it sometimes take a while to get it all up, but if you want it done right, you can find many who do that for a living.
