There Are Memories Hidden In Large Wall Mirrors

posted in Furnishings, Home Improvement, Memories |

The first thing that pops into my mind when I think of a large wall mirror is my great-aunt’s home. She was a nun who taught kindergarten at her local Catholic elementary school. She lived in a condo that was relatively small. To compensate for the smallness of the rooms, the designer installed a large wall mirror that spanned from floor to ceiling in the living room.

While the large wall mirror did the trick as far as tricking us into feeling as if the room were a bit bigger the whole thing got old really quickly. First of all, the interior designer was a designer who was way too caught up in the trends of his time, namely, the 1970’s. The cutting-edge style of the beveled glass that seemed to swallow the entire side of the house was the hot item of it’s day. However, it’s day has passed. It passed so long ago that it may just come back into style.

I really wouldn’t want to take a chance on that, though. When I was a child, the large wall mirror was an object of fascination for me. I really loved Alice in Wonderland, so the whole “mirror leading to another world” did a world of good for my imagination. My sister and I spent many afternoons playing near the large wall mirror, pretending to be consorting with our other selves on the other side.

The dated large wall mirror still holds great memories for me, but it is really time for it to go. This is just my honest opinion. My great aunt has retired from the nunnery and she no longer teaches. She has served the community for many years and she could use a little renovation in her little condo. It would take a lot of work to get the job done but it will be worth it in the end.

My great aunt doesn’t see it that way. The biggest challenge will be to get her to accept the change. She says that there are too many memories hidden in the large wall mirror, ones with little girls moving from side to side filling giggles in her home. She just won’t entertain the idea of parting with it. There are just some things that are more important than fashion. Besides, the large wall mirror does make the little condo seem like a vast mansion, in a way.
